The Maharashtra government has announced an affordable housing initiative in Mumbai for the city’s iconic Dabbawalas, who have been delivering tiffin services to Mumbaikars tirelessly for over 130 years. At a meeting held on September 13, 2024, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed plans to construct 12,000 homes in Mumbai for members of the Dabbawala and Charmkar (leather worker) communities.A formal understanding was reached between representatives of the Dabbawala and Charmkar associations and Priyanka Homes Realty to carry out this large-scale housing development. As per the agreement, a total of 12,000 residential units will be developed for families belonging to both communities.Earlier, on November 30, 2023, during the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony of the Dabbawala Bhavan Experience Center in Mumbai, Fadnavis had stated that he was personally monitoring the progress of the housing proposal. Owing to his sustained follow-up, the project secured approvals from all relevant departments within a year, paving the way for its execution. The agreement formalizing the project was recently signed in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis, leaders of the Dabbawala Sanghatan, office-bearers of the Charmakar (Leather Workers) Association, and Priyanka Homes Realty, marking a significant step toward providing affordable housing to these communities.

The Dabbawalas of Mumbai are widely admired for their disciplined and dependable lunch delivery service. For almost 130 years, this dedicated community has been serving Mumbaikars with remarkable consistency, collecting and distributing tiffin boxes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region through sheer coordination and commitment. What makes their system extraordinary is the precision with which they handle sorting, transportation, and final delivery—largely without the use of advanced technology. Their near-flawless accuracy and streamlined human network have drawn attention from management experts and business schools around the world, who study their model as an example of operational excellence. Their reputation has even reached global dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II.In today’s digital era, there is significant potential to further enhance the Dabbawala service by integrating improved communication tools, tracking systems, and technology-driven accessibility. With this vision in mind, the Dabbawala Experience Center was established, supported by the initiatives of Devendra Fadnavis, to celebrate and modernize this iconic profession.

Dream of a house will be realized in 3 years!

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the Maharashtra government has planned to provide residential units in Mumbai for members of the Dabbawala and Charmakar communities. For the execution of this initiative, MHADA will serve as the nodal agency overseeing the project.Approximately 30 acres of land located along the Central, Western, and Harbour railway corridors have been allotted to Priyanka Homes Realty for the development. The construction work will be carried out by Naman Builder on a no-profit, no-loss basis. The plan envisions the completion of nearly 12,000 housing units, each measuring around 500 square feet, within a three-year timeframe. These homes will be made available to eligible families from the Dabbawala and Charmakar communities at an approximate cost of ₹25 lakh per unit.

While deliberating on matters concerning the Dabbawala community in the Legislative Assembly, several members had urged the government to ensure that housing and essential amenities be made available to them at affordable rates. In response to the discussion, Devendra Fadnavis assured the House that suitable housing would be arranged for Dabbawalas in Mumbai at a reasonable cost. That assurance is now progressing toward realization, with concrete steps being taken to turn the commitment into reality.
